Vitamin K Deficiency May Lead to Osteoporosis

Posted by admin On January - 10 - 2010Comments Off

Deficiency in Vitamin K leads to decrease in the bone mineral density and may weaken the bones leading to Osteoporosis. This bone disease is most commonly found in the aged people and rarely in people who are very obese and also in pregnant women. The bones become very weak and thin and they develop small tiny cracks resulting in fractures and breaking of the bones. Sometimes the bones at the joints cannot even withstand their own body weight and result in breaking of the bones. Lack of Vitamin K decreases the calcium content in the bones.

There is a bone protein called “osteocalcin” which is made stronger by the intake of Vitamin K. This protein also helps in the bone structure and proper shape. On taking sufficient Vitamin K, this protein gets easily mixed with calcium and helps the bones to be stronger and provide good growth. When the body gets depleted of Vitamin K, the osteocalcin is not produced in the required amounts which make the bones weaker and fragile as aging increases. Therefore particularly, women and other young adolescents must have an abundant intake of Vitamin K only to prevent in degradation of the bones and avoid any bone diseases.

Foods such as green leafy vegetables like cabbages, spinach and green turnips are rich in Vitamin K. Intake of such foods including them in everyday diet makes one receive sufficient amounts of Vitamin K and therefore build stronger bones.
Vitamin K also helps in protecting the heart by making the blood pass through arteries and blood vessels and prevents any kind of blood clotting. Chopped and boiled leafy vegetables without adding salt are the most common foods people primarily prefer as such foods contain very high amounts of Vitamin K. Vitamin K is also called a blood thickener and clotting agent. When sufficiently taken, the Vitamin K helps in amalgamating with Calcium, Iron and Manganese already present in the body and the bone tissues helping them to get stronger enough. This mixture also gives rise to other nutrients and minerals that are necessary especially for elderly people.

There are few medicinal sources in order to take the Vitamin K but such intake must be accompanied by consultation and prescription of the doctor. Medicinal intake of Vitamin K might lead to other adverse effects and excessive intake where the body takes in more than required is also not considered to be fruitful always. Therefore one must make sure that they get the Vitamin K in the right proportions. Parents must include the foods rich in Vitamin K in the daily diet of the children. This helps the bones grow stronger and prevent and avoid any bone diseases like the Osteoporosis in the future and later stages of life. Necessary minerals and nutrients will also be passed onto the body by taking the foods that are rich in Vitamin K.

Carbonated Drinks and Osteoporosis

Today, it still remains an unbelievable fact that there is strong correlation between consumption of cola and getting affected by Osteoporosis disease. Many studies and research works show that on consuming the carbonated drink, one is most likely at risk of developing Osteoporosis, a disease where the bones become weak and fragile and go to the extent of developing cracks and also break, sometimes, under the person’s body weight. Another interesting fact is that this correlation and bonding between the cola consumption and Osteoporosis disease is mainly found in women rather than men.

Cola consumption is associated with strong lowering in the bone mineral density in the women irrespective of their age and other statuses. Depletion of the calcium commonly occurs in the bones at the joints – hips, knees, ankles, elbows and spine. Consuming the carbonated drinks is on the rise in these days due to the enormous amount of pressure and the burden one carries on his shoulders in today’s life. Most of the beverages and the carbonated drinks contain an acid called ‘phosphoric acid’.

Phosphorus that is contained in almost all the carbonated drinks reduces the calcium content in the bones making them susceptible to more breakage. This thinning of the bones proves a serious threat to many people in their later stages of life. Depletion of calcium weakens the bones and continues weakening causing the bones to get eroded and develop small and tiny pores in them. Though few studies reveal that the amount of phosphorus is quite negligible in the carbonated drinks, other facts show that since phosphorus is replacing the milk in the diet and is the primary factor in the loss of calcium content, it is also standing as the main reason for people to get affected from this bone disease.

Women therefore must be very cautious while consuming such carbonated drinks as calcium is very much important to make the bones stronger in the women today. Lack of calcium makes bones weaker and fragile and result in fractures and cracking of the bones; especially near the joints. Foods rich in calcium like the green leaf vegetables, whole fruits must be taken abundantly and should also be included in their daily diet as this helps in increasing the bone mass density and make the bones grow stronger. Dairy products also have high amount of calcium in them. Apart from Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and protein content food might also be taken as they provide the essential nutrients in order to make the bones grow stronger.

Women must regularly consult the doctor and take suggestions on the calcium levels in their bodies therefore avoiding any such bone diseases. This shows that the cola consumption and consumption of other carbonated drinks is highly related with the Osteoporosis where the phosphorus dominates and makes the bones lack of calcium; in turn making them weak and fragile. Hence consumption of cola must be avoided as much as possible to prevent oneself from any bone diseases.

Causes of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease where the bones become weak and fragile. They sometimes develop small pores and cracks and often break causing fractures unable to withstand the own body weight. This disease generally occurs as the people tend to become older. There are some rare cases where this disease is also found in people who are highly obese and in pregnant women. There are various causes for this disease to occur.

Osteoporosis occurs mainly due to the lifestyle habits one experiences daily and sometimes might also cause hereditarily… If a person’s family has a history of being affected by this disease, then there are more likely chances of even the person getting affected by Osteoporosis. Also, women tend to get effected more than men by this disease. Other factors by which this disease occurs is due to the lifestyle habits and those causes which could be controlled by oneself.

If there are low estrogen levels, particularly in women, then the person is more likely to get affected by Osteoporosis disease. Women should therefore take care of their bone health while at a young age by taking proper supply of nutrients all the while. This helps build the estrogen levels during adolescence and one is not at high risks of this bone disease. Also, if there is any history of broken bones; for example, when a person meets with any accidents or fractures and results in breaking his/her bones, even if at a young age; then such persons also have more chances of getting the bone disease later in the life. This is because, once affected, the bones in that particular location of the body become weak and are not strong enough as they are in the normal people who never experienced any breaking. Such weak bones, on aging of the person, become weaker and tend to develop small cracks, especially if there are no proper nutrients and minerals being supplied and become the primary cause for developing Osteoporosis.

Low body weight in particular persons also result in the person being affected with Osteoporosis disease. Therefore one should try to build their bone mineral density right from their young ages by taking good food sources that are rich in calcium and minerals so that the bone tissue gets strong enough even at the older stages of life.

Most of the causes of Osteoporosis can be reduced by following proper diet and nutrition. Include food sources rich in calcium, like dairy products, green leafy vegetables and whole fruits in everyday diet are one such option to increase the bone mineral density. Vitamin D is another such vitamin that helps bones grow stronger. There are other vitamins and minerals like the magnesium, Vitamin B, Vitamin K etc; most of which are found in the green vegetables and including such nutrients will prevent one from suffering from weak and thin bones in the later stages of his life.
